What Do Brake Drums Do?
Drum brakes are a crucial component of a vehicle's braking system. Brake drums serve the following functions:
Friction and Stopping Power
They are typically made of cast iron and are responsible for generating friction that slows down or stops the vehicle when you apply the brakes. Hydraulic pressure is applied to the brake shoes within the drum when the brake pedal is pressed, causing them to press against the inner surface of the drum and generate stopping power.
Heat Dissipation
To prevent overheating and brake fade, brake drums are designed with fins or vanes on their inner surface, which help dissipate heat.
Parking Brake Function
Additionally, in many vehicles, the drum brake system serves as the parking brake, which mechanically clamps the brake shoes against the interior of the brake drum to prevent the vehicle from moving.
