OEM Saab Starters
What Does a Starter Do for a Saab Vehicle?
Much like other for vehicles, it "cranks" or rotates (essentially, starts) the engine.
How Do Saab Starters Work?
For every car, from the Saab 9-3 to the Saab 9000, the process is practically the same, and fairly straightforward, too. It begins with the starter solenoid. This part draws electricity from the battery and sends it to the starter. This causes the starter's gear to push forward, contacting and rotating the teeth on the engine's flywheel.
From your perspective, however, all that happens is that the key turns in the ignition lock cylinder (or you tap push-button start), and the engine starts. That is, of course, unless you have a remote starter that does the job via a key fob; this relies, like push-button ignition, on no more than the push of a button.
What are the Signs of a Bad Starter in a Saab?
Generally, they're the same as in other vehicles, and whether you drive a Saab 9-5 or otherwise. Starter failure usually happens because a wire or two has come loose, some parts have gotten damaged, or this or that terminal has corroded. Luckily, the signs of problems with a starter are noticeable well before this. They include dash lights illuminating without the car starting, failed jump-starts, and the engine only starting in some drive modes or gears, but not in others. You may also find the starter covered in oil or smoking upon inspection.
See any of these, and you may need to install a new factory Saab starter (and this is even more likely the case if you've already ruled out problems with your Saab alternator and spark plugs). Luckily, you can take care of the job yourself in hours if you've got the skillset and can get the gist of a basic wiring diagram (though having an electrician or a Saab service professional do it is recommended). Either way, and most importantly, before buying a new one, you should make sure it's the genuine article.
Why Buy a Genuine OEM Starter from Saab vs. Aftermarket?
The brand designs its starters to spec for its cars, from Saab 9-2X to Saab 9-7X. That compatibility assurance, not all aftermarket brands can make.
Where to Order Genuine Saab Starters Online
We carry a wide-ranging selection at prices more affordable than at other auto parts stores. For instance, the average cost of replacing a starter can run from just over $400 to almost $600, depending on the model. The average cost of Saab 9-3 starter replacement, for instance, can be even higher, around $700 or so at most. However, what we offer is priced well below retail, and since you're a do-it-yourselfer, you'll save even more on labor costs, too.
To find a compatible starter more quickly, first choose your model from our Saab parts catalog, and then select its model year. Buy now, and we'll ship to any US address in no time. Of course, we're here to help, too, should you have questions or concerns or need buying advice from an expert. Feel free to contact our parts team anytime you like; we're at your service.
