The Volkswagen Beetle was a compact car that Volkswagen debuted in 1938. If you're driving one these days, it's probably one of two models made between 1998 and 2019. One, the Volkswagen New Beetle, came out in 1997. The other, the Volkswagen Beetle (A5), released in 2012. Both have been available in coupe, convertible, and hatchback body styles.

Early on, and up into the 2010s, trims ranged widely, from base, TDI, GL, GLS, and GLX to Sport, Turbo S, 2.5, and GLS TDI, plus S and SE. Engine options during this time included 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gas, 1.9-liter, four-cylinder diesel, and 2.5-liter, five-cylinder. In 2012, base and Turbo trims were offered, as were several turbocharged engines and either a five- or six-speed manual, a six-speed automatic, or a six-speed dual-clutch (DCT) transmission. Features ranged from alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and Fender premium audio to a rear spoiler, plus pedal covers that were made of brushed aluminum.

For its final year, the model came in S, SE, Final Edition SE, and Final Edition SEL trims. You could get a 5-inch infotainment touchscreen, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Keyless ignition was also available, as were perks such as bi-Xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights and taillights.
