How Long Can a Volkswagen Rabbit Last?

Rabbit was one fun-to-drive hatchback, a ride as only Volkswagen can deliver. For you, it still is. It should last you decades, too, hundreds of thousands of miles. Luckily, it's pretty cheap to maintain. You just have to keep up with regular service and take care of the occasional problem common to the line. Shop with us here at Countryside Volkswagen for the parts and accessories for the job; we've got everything you need.

Common Volkswagen Rabbit Problems and Repairs

Timing Chains

Engine rattling when you start, or while idling? Maybe it's misfiring, and the Check Engine light's turning on to boot. Metal shavings in your oil, though? There's a good chance the timing chain is bad, or its tensioner's failed. Luckily, the replacement we sell is genuine VW -- OEM quality, just like what your Rabbit got from the factory. It'll be dependable, unlike a lot of aftermarket engine parts. Buy with confidence.

HVAC

Heater and AC smell musty? Check the drain system for debris, and you should probably clean the heater case. If you need replacement parts, though, we carry them discounted from MSRP and backed by warranty. Enjoy the peace of mind -- you'll be getting the best value out there.

Fuel System

Hearing a pop after starting or when you slow down? The Check Engine light turning on to boot? There's a good chance the problem's the leak detection pump in the fuel system. (This is even more likely if the popping stops and fuel economy get worse, you start seeing P2404 and/or P0441 error codes, you can't start after filling up at the pump, and you start vibrating when slowing down.)

What's happening is the pump's finding a fault, filling the gas tank with air, and then releasing it to retest the system (to make sure it's working right again). The issue's actually the system's EVAP system purge (N80) valve, specifically; it's probably stuck open, and the tank isn't pressurizing properly. You'll need to replace it.

Don't worry; you can start browsing for replacements right away. Just select your Rabbit model year and trim/engine; what'll fit will show up -- no compatibility guesswork's needed.
